WWE SummerSlam 2019 Results: News, Notes After Seth Rollins Beats Brock Lesnar For Universal Title

WWE Summer Slam
WWE SummerSlam delivered a mixed bag of matches in a hot-and-cold Scotiabank Arena on a show headlined by Seth Rollins retaining the WWE Universal Championship over Brock Lesnar in an electrifying main event.

Goldberg defeated Dolph Ziggler in typical Goldberg fashion, including a pair of bonus spears, while Bray Wyatt stole the entire show with a highly memorable debut as The Fiend.
Meanwhile, Charlotte Flair defeated Trish Stratus to cement her claim as the Queen of All Eras, while Kofi Kingston and Randy Orton battled to a very disappointing double count-out.

Drew Gulak def. Oney Lorcan—WWE Cruiserweight Championship (Kickoff Show)
I watched parts of this match on mute and judging by the still half-empty arena I’m guessing it didn’t make much of a difference with the sound.
The harder these two worked, the sadder I got knowing nobody will remember it tomorrow.

Buddy Murphy def. Apollo Crews via Disqualification (Kickoff Show)
Buddy Murphy’s slotting on this card was in line with where he is typically slotted, but a complete departure from his appearance during SmackDown Live’s main event segment just five days ago.
WWE used the SummerSlam Kickoff show to continue the buildup of Roman Reigns vs. Daniel Bryan and/or Erick Rowan. They’re literally still building up a major angle during the show where it was supposed to pay off.
I wonder how many people had no idea why Erick Rowan attacked Buddy Murphy because WWE didn’t do a good enough job introducing him before he was attacked by Roman Reigns.
Alexa Bliss and Nikki Cross def. The IIconics—WWE Women’s Tag Team Championship (Kickoff Show)

Between the Buzz Lightyear gear and Corey Graves slowly starting to turn on her, Alexa Bliss may have just turned babyface for no damn reason.
If nothing else, this match was a great commercial for the 12 people who still haven’t seen Toy Story 4.
Becky Lynch def. Natalya—WWE Raw Women’s Championship
Corey Graves said you can’t claim an entire country as your hometown, which is a point I’ve been making this whole build!
I couldn’t tell if the crowd popped louder for Natalya or the Canadian flag but I’m sure we’ll have an answer by the conclusion of this match.
Becky Lynch is in the John Cena role in today’s WWE, and by that I mean it’s always painfully obvious when she’s calling a spot.
The “let’s go Becky!” chants were not matched with dueling chants of “let’s go Nattie.” As the match went on, however, they were matched with “Becky sucks,” which I guess was somewhat encouraging for Natalya.

Goldberg def. Dolph Ziggler
Goldberg did not walk out of his locker room bleeding, which is an excellent start.
Yes, Matt Riddle is burying Goldberg on the WWE watch-along and, while I disagree, it’s the only time I’ve ever gone out of my way to see what’s happening on the watch-along.
AJ Styles def. Ricochet—WWE United States Championship
The only difference between Ricochet and a Marvel superhero is storyline continuity.
Has anybody ever had a better physique that was covered up head-to-toe than Ricochet?

This match sleepwalked to a very satisfying finish.
Bayley def. Ember Moon—WWE SmackDown Women’s Championship
Ember Moon’s smeared eye makeup made it look like she just realized how much time is left on her WWE contract.
There appeared to be faint “we want Sasha” chant, and even a “Hey Bayley” chant as Toronto was not as cold toward Bayley as it usually is.
Kevin Owens def. Shane McMahon

Shane McMahon seems like the only McMahon who wouldn’t immediately lock his car doors in the parking lot of a Drake Concert.
Kevin Owens is from Montreal, but the Scotiabank Arena clearly considers that as part of Toronto.
Kevin Owens selling for Shane McMahon is not something anybody paid their money to see, but to their credit, it drew impassioned “Shane you suck!” chants.
Charlotte Flair def. Trish Stratus
After the bell rang, Charlotte Flair and Trish Stratus stood in the ring waiting for a reaction. And they waited. And waited…
Chanting “you still got it,” is like saying “you look great for 40!"

I went from worrying this match wouldn’t receive a reaction, to worrying Trish Stratus was going to die on the top rope, to realizing how good this match truly was. Well done.
Kofi Kingston and Randy Orton Battle to a Double Count Out—WWE Championship
A late contender for the chant of the night was the dueling chants of “Kofi’s stupid/Randy sucks!”
The RKO spot in this match was stupid good. The finish was just plain stupid.
Bray “The Fiend” Wyatt def. Finn Balor

In addition to “holy [expletive] chants, these fans chanted every Bray Wyatt catchphrase they could think of. It felt different and better than anything on the show. What a success.
The Fiend’s debut feels like the beginning of something too powerful to be screwed up with future incompetence among WWE brass. I hope I’m right.
Seth Rollins def. Brock Lesnar—WWE Universal Championship
Some fans booed Seth Rollins, presumably because Brock Lesnar is a Canadian citizen, but they didn’t necessarily treat Lesnar like a conquering hero either.
The opening moments of this match, not to mention the match itself, made wrestling fans worldwide forget they didn’t want to see this match.
