India vs West Indies: Chris Gayle sports special edition jersey in 3rd ODI in Port of Spain
Chris Gayle has experimented with his jersey number as the West Indies great sported "301" in the 3rd ODI against India at the Queen's Park Oval in Port of Spain on Wednesday.
Chris Gayle, who is playing his 301st ODI, walked out to bat with the special jersey to mark the special occasion after West Indies won the toss for the first time in the ongoing tour.
Notably, Gayle has worn jerseys with "milestone numbers" in the past. The T20 cricket legend had worn 333 (his highest score in Test cricket) in limited-overs cricket, including the Indian Premier League when he represented Virat Kohli-led Royal Challengers Bangalore.
Gayle is now the most-capped West Indies player in ODIs as the big-hitting opener went past Brian Lara's mark of 299 ODIs during the 2nd ODI of the ongoing series on Sunday.
Chris Gayle also became the all-time leading run-scorer in ODIs for West Indies as he went past Brian Lara's tally 10,405 when he 11 runs in the 2nd ODI.
There was a lot of hype surrounding Gayle's 300th ODI but the big-hitting opener failed to get going. He was dismissed cheaply by Bhuvneshwar Kumar in his landmark innings.
Speaking before the landmark ODI, the biggest entertainer of world cricket said it was an honour for him to play 300 ODIs.
Notably, Gayle had reversed his decision to retire as he was expected to bow out after West Indies' World Cup 2019 campaign. Gayle said he wanted to extend his career to play the India series.
"It is a great achievement to play 300th ODI. When I look back, I say, could I make 300th ODI and I am very thankful that I am playing this 300th match. I enjoy playing this format without a doubt, I enjoyed batting with you (Darren Ganga) too," Gayle said in a pre-match interview.
"We are trying to build more unity in our team. The guys like Shai Hope, Shimron Hetmyer and Nicholas Pooran those guys will carry West Indies forward.
When John Campbell gets his chance, he will have something to showcase. I am there to guide them as much as possible and try to help West Indies cricket as much as possible."
Gayle had hinted he would play at least 1 of the 2 Tests but the Universe Boss was not considered for selection for the 2-Test series against India, starting August 22 in Antigua.
Gayle has remained tight-lipped about his future in ODI cricket but the West Indies star might have played his final match in the 50-over international format in Trinidad on Wednesday.
