Ross Taylor hit an unbeaten fifty as New Zealand fought back strongly on Day 1 of the first Test match against Sri Lanka at Galle.
After succumbing to 71 for 3 at lunch, the duo of Henry Nicholls and Taylor got together to steady the ship and take the scoreboard to 203 for five when rain stopped play in the final session. Taylor was batting on 86, while Sri Lanka's Akila Dananjaya starred with the ball, picking up five wickets.
The spinner took three early wickets, including that of Kane Williamson's, before Taylor got together with Nicholls and stitched together a 100-run partnership.

Dananjaya was overlooked for the Tests in New Zealand, Australia and South Africa earlier, but impressed today as he broke the crucial partnership by sending Nicholls back for 42, and then returned to dismiss Watling.
Taylor, at the other end, however, held one end up and registered his 31st Test fifty, and also surpassed the highest score by a New Zealand batter at Galle, when he crossed Tim McIntosh's 69.
Upfront, the batting duo of Jeet Raval and Tom Latham played with caution to put on 64 runs for the opening wicket, before Dananjaya struck on a track that was already offering a lot of turn.
Skipper Williamson fell three balls later, to leave the Black Caps reeling.
Play was ultimately stopped at 3.42pm due to rain, with 22 overs still remaining in the day's play.
The match will resume half an hour early tomorrow.
Both Sri Lanka and New Zealand are playing their first game of the World Test Championship.
