India are total command at the moment. Windies are still trying to recover from the early blows. But the problem for them has been the low scoring rate of both Pollard and Brathwaite. After 14 overs Windies are 65/5.

A short one and Pooran goes for a big one. But this time he edges one and Pant takes a simple catch. Windies are three down now. It's 28/3.

“Unfortunately, he took another knock and he doesn't think that if he comes here, he'd be doing justice to other people who could be here and are 100%. Obviously, he's a big loss, not only on the field but off the field. "In the dressing room, in and around the team, he's a big character, very jovial, and in my eyes, a leader in the dressing room as well. But, obviously, if we need to get him ready for the Twenty20 World Cup, we have to do without him for a couple of series, I prefer that than pushing him in this series and making a long term injury."

Though his inclusion in the squad was subject to a fitness test, Cricket West Indies announced that Russell had informed the selection committee of his unavailability. "He really wanted to play, he really wanted to come and show off his skills and show off what he does in franchise cricket for the West Indies,” Carlos Brathwaite, the West Indies T20I captain, said.

All-rounder Andre Russell has ruled himself out of the first couple of T20 Internationals against India due to discomfort in his surgically-repaired knee at the Global T20 Canada, and captain Carlos Brathwaite believes that he will be missed. One of the senior players in the squad, Russell, who injured his knee recently at the World Cup did turn out for Vancouver Knights in Canada after making himself unavailable for the India games.

"Even last time we played, it was pretty good, high-scoring and we all had a lot of fun playing here. This time is going to be no different. More than looking at the facility or anything like that at this stage, it's more about coming to America and just playing cricket here and spreading the word that cricket can potentially be a sport that can be added here. And at that same time, for the people to come and watch as well, it's just a nice time to be around for the whole week."

"I think the good thing is with T20 cricket we're not really worried about the mindset of the players because having played IPL back home for so many years and being good performers in the T20 format, these guys have a lot of composure," Kohli said. Kohli said that he was looking forward to playing in Florida again. India last played here three years ago against the West Indies and lost the series 0-1.

"All these are proven performers and we actually have a lot of belief in their abilities. We know giving the ball to anyone at any stage of the game, they'll do the job. Everyone is a professional here and they have come because of a lot of T20 experience. If you look at the IPL you will have so many options, but you choose 15 which are the best. That's what it was down to. And you expect them to do the job on the day."

According to Kohli, this is also the time when Delhi’s Rishabh Pant should look to gain experience and cement his place in the team. "It's a great opportunity for someone like Rishabh Pant to really play a lot of international cricket, show his credentials, really unleash his potential at this stage," Kohli said. "We know how much ability he has and we all want him to become a consistent performer for the Indian cricket team. MS's experience is always going to be a very crucial factor but having said that some of these younger guys have a great opportunity ahead of them and they should just look forward to it."

Back on the field after their World Cup debacle, Team India will start their preparations for next year's World T20 in the first T20I of the three-match series against the West Indies at the Central Broward Regional Park Stadium on Saturday. Before leaving for the West Indies tour, skipper Virat Kohli had said the line-up of such trophies - World T20s in 2020 and 2021 -- ensured 'players always had something to play for, look forward to'. And thus, the three-match rubber will provide him with the chance of giving youngsters an opportunity to showcase their talent in the shortest format of the game. 

The series will serve as a great opportunity for the likes of Manish Pandey, Shreyas Iyer and Khaleel Ahmed, who missed out on a chance to play in the 50-over World Cup in UK. All these three players performed well for the India 'A' side in the Caribbean Islands and would want to continue with their form and impress the captain as well as the selectors for future. The series could also see Rahul Chahar and Navdeep Saini make their international debuts as many senior bowlers have been rested. The only experienced campaigner in the pace bowling line-up is Bhuvneshwar Kumar. In the batting department, Rohit Sharma is almost certain to be joined by his regular partner Shikhar Dhawan who got injured in England. K.L. Rahul will most likely be batting after Kohli if the team management doesn't wish to give Iyer a go. This should be followed by promising wicketkeeper Rishabh Pant. 

The Men in Blue will go into the series as favourites even though West Indies are counted amongst the most dangerous sides in this format of the game. The hosts, led by Carlos Brathwaite, have the likes of Kieron Pollard, Sunil Narine and Andre Russell who are more than capable of turning the game in a flash. In bowling department too, they boast of having the likes of Sheldon Cottrell and Oshane Thomas who are match-winners in T20 format. Thus, fans can be rest assured of some fireworks in the three-match T20I series.
